A Royal Success

Sweet Charity would like to thank everyone who came out -- on a very chilly night -- to O'Neill's Irish Bar in support of Kings Collegiate! The event raised over $1,500. We had a great turnout and were happy to welcome as many new faces as familiar ones.

Thanks again to everyone for coming!

A Bar Games Success Story

The Sweet Charity event on July 31 at Finnerty's raised over $1100 in support of bone marrow testing! Thanks again to our faithful supporters.

We are also happy to announce our Bar Games winner... the exceptionally loyal Sweet Charity supporters Team Soccer Crazy! Buoyed by Leon's first-place time in the knock-over-the-water-bottle-with-pantyhose-and-a-tennis-ball game, Brent, Leon, Nathan and Tom defeated 7 other teams to win the Best Bar Gamers Ever title. (They no doubt got an additional boost by bringing their own fight songs.)

It was a very close battle as Team Soccer Crazy beat Team Y & Z (Huy, Darley, Liz, Maz) by only two points and Team Flava (Gary, Amanda, Joe, Lex) by four points.

Honorable Mention goes to Team Y & Z for placing first in the indoor-version beer relay, to Team Flava's Gary the Flash Matrix for pinning the nose on that clown better than anyone else, to Keryn, who just got engaged, and to Andi, who is finally getting her feet fixed!

From all of us at Sweet Charity, thank you, congratulations, and we look forward to seeing you next month!

Bar Games Field Day

Oh, there will be MORE . . .

On Your Mark

Get Set . . . Go!!

The July Sweet Charity is scheduled for Thursday, July 31st.

We will be raising money for the National Marrow Donor Program:

Each month, the NMDP conducts nearly 900 bone marrow drives across the country -- 300 of which are coordinated on behalf of individual patients. SC learned about this organization through a drive to benefit a 23-year-old named Matthew Hines, who works at Deutsche Bank.

We are hoping to find a bar with outdoor space. By then, maybe the ridiculous heat will have died down :)

STD with location, drink specials, etc. coming soon!!

- the atomic number of iron (Fe); and
- the number of miles in a marathon!

And, it's also the day in June that we all get together to show support for 2 Sweet Charity veterans -- Alicia MAZurek & Anna Chai -- who are running the 2008 NYC Marathon to raise money for Team For Kids.

WHEN:  Thursday, June 26th @ 6pm
VENUE:  Dempsey's Pub

There's talk of making it a real drink-athon . . . Are you up for 26.2 fluid ounces?

KIPP Summit Academy
We are pleased to announce that Sweet Charity is now bi-coastal!

This month's happy hour will benefit the "Literacy Lab" at Kipp Summit Academy in San Lorenzo, CA. (In the East Bay, next door to Oakland.)

This public charter school was founded in 2003 for under-served students and families. Most of the families are living under the poverty line -- currently, 66% of the students get free or reduced price lunch -- and for a large part of the student body, English is not their first language.

In "Literacy Lab," every student begins the day with an hour-long period where they read together in small book clubs. This program is dedicated to "reading for fun" -- not textbooks -- and the book list reflects the multicultural make-up of the school, as well as the actual interests of its students. I mean, how cool is it that these 8th graders get to read Nick Hornby?

The problem is, the kids are running out of books! There's no money left in the budget and it's only March . . .

There are a couple ways to help:
The school has created a list of high-interest, reading-level appropriate book titles. Please take a look and consider buying a book. Even if you can only buy one book, every book helps!

3) Happy Hour @ Arrow Bar
Same as before. We provide the good times and the good cause, you bring your good selves!

See you on Fri, March 28th! Until then, follow the Kipp School motto:

A Story of Success

Last night's event confirmed something for us: our Sweet Charity drinking club DEFINITELY has a giving problem. This event resulted in over $2200 in donations to Liz and Trang The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)! Sweet Charity would like to thank everyone who came, as well as Boss Tweeds, for the generosity. We hope you had as good a time -- especially when taking advantage of the great drink deals that came with your donations-- as we did.

The night was fantastic in more ways than one. First, this tremendous support is sincerely appreciated by all of us, and especially by Liz Berls as she trains for the Team in Training triathlon (in support of LLS) in April.

Second, it was a winner for "Team Andi". . .  In the Flip Cup Tournament, the competition was Team Andi (Right)fierce throughout the night. In a very close final game, Team Andi defeated Team Berls 3-2. The winning team included Jerry DeMarmels, Frank Weigand, Keryn Paier, Andi Zhao, and Rachael Clark (shown at right in the photo).

If you didn't make it to Boss Tweeds, we're sorry you missed it. You can still support Liz at http://www.active.com/donate/tntnyc/lizberls

Meanwhile . . .

STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS ABOUT OUR NEXT EVENT!

Thanks,
Sweet Charity

February 2008 = Leap Year

This month's happy hour will benefit Team in Training and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Liz Berls is training for her very first triathlon: St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Florida. That's right -- our elite amateur is swimming 1.5K, cycling 40K, and running 10K, to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins and myeloma.

As part of her commitment to Team in Training, Liz needs to raise $4,600 and she's 40% towards her goal. Read all about her grueling training. And then, go ahead and donate!
